Per-capita soda consumption has been steadily declining, from more than 50 gallons annually in 2000 to less than 37 gallons in 2019. During this period, annual per capita bottled water consumption has been rising, and in 2019 was 44 gallons. But the decline in soda sales has been partially offset by dramatic growth in sales of energy drinks, which are typically very high in sugar and caffeine. The U.S. energy drink market, which Red Bull launched in the late ‘90s, was projected to generate more than $9 billion in sales last year, compared to soda sales generating $29.4 billion in a recent one-year period.
