Producing one kilogram of beef requires more than 15,000 liters of water, according to a report prepared by two Dutch professors and published by the Water Footprint Network. Other food types studied for their water usage based on one kilo of production included nuts (9,063 liters), sheep/goat meat (8,763 liters), pig meat (5,988), chicken (4,325), fruits (962 liters), and vegetables (322 liters).
