A key contributor to poor health in the United States is the consumption of fast food. (A study published last year by the Friedman School of Nutrition at Tufts showed that about 70 percent of fast-food meals were of “poor” nutritional quality.) But fast-food franchise outlets, which have been rebranded as “quick service establishments,” continue to proliferate throughout the country – increasing in number from about 150,000 in 2007 to nearly 200,000 last year.
