A high-sodium diet is associated with high blood pressure, strokes, and heart attacks. Americans consume an average of 3,400 milligrams of sodium each day – nearly 50 percent more than the federal government’s recommended daily amount, according to a CDC study published in 2017. The study found that home food preparation and salt manually added to food account for only about 11 percent of sodium consumption, while 70 percent comes from the consumption of either processed food or restaurant fare (like Chili’s “Ultimate Smokehouse Combo,” with more than 8,000 milligrams of sodium).
