U.S. spending on meat products rose 19 percent last year (following a rise of just 1 percent in 2019), to $82.5 billion, according to a report released last month by the North American Meat Institute. Survey data also showed that 43 percent of Americans report buying more meat than in the past. Spending on plant-based meat alternatives, such as the Impossible Burger, rose nearly 84 percent, but accounts for just 0.6 percent of total meat sales.
