Food and Health Fact #60: Spending on ads by restaurant and beverage companies vs. federal spending on obesity prevention

The CDC office focused on obesity prevention – the Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity – received about $100 million funding in 2019 (31 cents per person). In the same year, advertising by the 10 largest restaurant chains in the United States totaled $2.77 billion while advertising for Coke, Pepsi, Gatorade, Mountain Dew, Dr. Pepper, and Sprite totaled another $883 million.
