Processed meat has been classified by the World Health Organization as a Group 1 human carcinogen, putting it in the same category as asbestos and tobacco. Diets high in processed meat are responsible for an estimated 304,000 annual deaths globally. By comparison, in 2017 there were 167,000 deaths globally from illicit drug use.
