Beef has the largest carbon footprint of all the world’s foods, generating 60 kilograms of greenhouse gas emissions for every one kilogram produced, according to a 2018 paper in Science by two Oxford University professors. The next highest emitters were lamb & mutton (24 kilos), cheese (21 kilos), beef from dairy herd (21 kilos), chocolate (19 kilos), and coffee (17 kilos). The foods with the lowest emissions were nuts (0.3 kilos), citrus fruits (0.3 kilos), apples (0.4 kilos), root vegetables (0.4 kilos), bananas (0.7 kilos), peas (0.9 kilos) and soy milk (0.9 kilos).
