Food and Health Fact #38: Americans' increased consumption of added fats and oils

The biggest change in the American diet from 1970-2010 was increased consumption of added fats and oils (such as olive oil and canola oil), rising from 337 calories per day to 562 calories, according to a U.S. Department of Agriculture report. This amount was 66 percent above the daily limit recommended by the U.S. government.
