A breakthrough international study published Monday in Nature Medicine revealed a strong connection between the food individuals consume, the profile of their gut microbiome, and their health. Healthy gut bacteria were associated with unprocessed foods such as vegetables, nuts, seafood, and full-fat yogurt. Conversely, juices, sweetened beverages, white bread, and processed meats were linked to unhealthy gut bacteria that increase an individual’s risk of developing diabetes, heart disease, and obesity. The study showed that diet had a bigger influence on the microbiome than one’s genetic profile.
