Food and Health Fact #30: Fast food items grow in size and calories

A 2019 study analyzed menu items at 10 popular fast-food chains in the United States (including McDonald’s, Burger King, and Wendy’s), spanning from 1986 to 2016. The study, published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, revealed that calorie counts and portion sizes (in grams) of entrée items increased 27 percent and 24 percent, respectively; sides increased 24 percent and 3 percent, respectively; and desserts increased 79 percent and 71 percent, respectively.
