The life expectancy of males in Costa Rica is about 18 months longer than that of males in the United States. A comprehensive study of both countries published in 2016 by the National Academies of Sciences concluded that “the differences in central obesity would be sufficient by itself to statistically explain all of the Costa Rican male mortality advantage.”
