The U.S. diabetes rate has risen from less than 1% in 1958 to more than 10% today. (Type 2 diabetes, which is closely associated with being overweight or obese, accounts for 90-95% of diabetes cases.) During this period, the number of deaths from diabetes, as a share of total deaths, has risen from 1.7 percent to as much as 12 percent.
