Food and Health Fact #18: Leading causes of diet-related death globally

Dietary risk factors caused 11 million deaths globally in 2017, according to research published last year in The Lancet. The most common risk factors causing death were high intake of sodium (3 million), low intake of whole grains (3 million), and low intake of fruits (2 million). Close to half of all the deaths were among adults younger than 70.
