US life expectancy fell to 76.6 years in 2021 – the lowest level since 1999 – and marking a net loss of 2.26 years since 2019, according to a study released yesterday. The life expectancy decline is larger than at any time since World War II, and the life expectancy gap between the United States and other peer nations has grown from 3.3 years in 2019 to nearly 5.3 years in 2021 (see chart below).
