Americans are consuming close to 20 percent less sugar than they were 15 years ago. But this decline follows many decades of increased consumption (see chart below), and on a per-capita basis, Americans still consume more sugar per day (126 grams) than any other country. (The Food and Drug Administration recommends no more than 50 grams of added sugar per day.)
